ABOUT BURN TREATMENT

Same-day urgent care for burns across Los Angeles prompt, professional burn wound care for first and second degree burns

Burns are painful, stressful injuries that require prompt medical evaluation to prevent infection, minimize scarring, and support proper healing. At Mederi Urgent Care, our providers offer same-day urgent care for burns at our open Los Angeles-area clinics, treating first and second degree burns caused by heat, scalds, steam, sun, and chemical exposure. With an average wait time of under nine minutes, you receive expert burn wound care quickly without the cost and wait of an emergency room.

Not every burn requires a hospital visit, but all burns beyond superficial redness deserve a professional assessment. First degree burns affect only the outermost layer of skin and are characterized by redness, pain, and dryness without blistering. Second degree burn treatment at urgent care is appropriate for burns that cause blistering, significant swelling, and damage extending into the deeper layers of skin, provided the burn covers a limited surface area and is not located over the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints. Our providers assess burn depth, surface area, and location to determine the appropriate level of care and initiate the correct treatment immediately.

Minor burn treatment at our urgent care clinic includes wound cleaning, blister assessment, professional burn dressing application, pain management, tetanus evaluation, and detailed aftercare instructions. For patients involved in workplace accidents or personal injury situations, we provide thorough documentation of the burn injury for insurance and legal purposes. HOW BURN TREATMENT WORKS AT URGENT CARE

Burn Assessment and Classification

Your provider begins by assessing the burn to determine its degree, total body surface area affected, location, and cause. We classify burns as first degree (superficial), second degree (partial thickness), or third degree (full thickness) based on depth and appearance. Burn location is critical burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over joints are treated more conservatively due to functional and cosmetic risk. Burns suspected to be third degree or covering a large area are transferred to a burn center or emergency department.

Wound Cleaning and Dressing

After assessment, we gently clean the burn wound with sterile saline to remove debris and reduce the bacterial load on the wound surface. Intact blisters are typically preserved as a natural protective barrier. Ruptured blisters are debrided carefully. We apply a professional burn dressing appropriate to the burn type, which may include non-adherent wound dressings, antimicrobial agents such as silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene), or biosynthetic dressings designed for burn wound care. Proper dressing selection significantly reduces pain, infection risk, and healing time.

Aftercare Instructions and Follow-Up

We provide written aftercare instructions including wound cleaning frequency, dressing change technique, activity restrictions, pain management guidance, and a list of infection warning signs to watch for. We assess tetanus vaccination status and administer a booster if needed. Follow-up appointments for dressing changes and wound monitoring are recommended, and we are available for return visits at an open Los Angeles-area clinic. Patients with work-related or personal injury burns receive detailed injury documentation at the time of their visit.

COMPREHENSIVE BURN TREATMENT SERVICES

First-Degree Burn Treatment

First degree burns affect only the epidermis (outermost skin layer) and present with redness, pain, and dryness without blistering. Sunburns are the most common first degree burn. Minor burn treatment for first degree injuries includes cooling the area, moisturizing with aloe-based products, pain management with oral anti-inflammatory medication, and guidance on protecting the area from further sun exposure. Most first degree burns heal within 3 to 5 days without scarring.

Second-Degree Burn Treatment

Second degree burns penetrate into the dermis and produce blistering, significant pain, swelling, and a wet or weeping wound appearance. Urgent care second degree burn treatment is appropriate for burns covering a limited area that are not on the face, hands, feet, or genitals. Our providers perform thorough wound cleaning, assess blister integrity, apply appropriate burn dressings, prescribe pain management, and evaluate for tetanus prophylaxis. Second degree burn treatment requires follow-up wound checks to monitor healing and detect early infection.

Scald and Steam Burn Treatment

Scald burns from hot liquids and steam are among the most common burn injuries seen at urgent care for burns. These injuries frequently occur in kitchen and workplace settings and can range from superficial redness to deep partial-thickness injuries depending on the temperature of the liquid and the duration of contact. Our providers assess the depth and extent of scald burns using the same protocol as thermal burns and apply appropriate burn wound care. Children who sustain scald burns are evaluated with particular care given the sensitivity of developing skin.

Chemical Burn Evaluation and Treatment

Chemical burns from acids, alkalis, solvents, or cleaning agents require prompt decontamination and professional evaluation. The severity of a chemical burn depends on the substance involved, its concentration, and the duration of contact. Our providers assess chemical burns after thorough irrigation has been performed, determine the depth of tissue involvement, apply appropriate burn dressings, and arrange referral for ophthalmology or specialist assessment when the eyes or sensitive areas are involved. Patients with severe chemical exposure are transferred to the emergency department.

Burn Wound Care and Dressing Changes

Ongoing burn wound care is essential to prevent infection and support healing. After initial urgent care for burns, dressing changes are required at regular intervals to keep the wound clean, moist, and protected. Our locations provide follow-up burn wound care visits for patients who need professional dressing changes, wound inspection, and healing assessment. We stock a range of burn dressings including non-stick wound contacts, silver-impregnated antimicrobial dressings, and hydrogel products suited to different burn types and stages of healing.

Burn Infection Prevention and Monitoring

Burns are highly susceptible to infection because damaged skin loses its protective barrier function. We take infection prevention seriously at every burn wound care visit, using appropriate antimicrobial dressings, prescribing topical agents when indicated, and educating patients on the signs of wound infection. If a burn wound shows signs of infection at a follow-up visit, we assess the need for oral antibiotics and determine whether the wound requires escalated care. Early identification of burn wound infection significantly improves healing outcomes.

MARTHA D.

I was very fortunate to stumble across this gem of an urgent care facility. Extremely clean, tidy and staffed with user-friendly, proffessional receptionist Lauren/nurse-xray tech Landon and attending provider Lily. All three set me at ease and were wonders at their jobs. Dr. Lily was bang-on in her assessment of my fast moving foot infection, and quickly directed me to where I needed to get optimal treatment. Landon sent my x-rays where they needed to be asap. Lauren was an absolute sweetheart in keeping the waiting area moving smoothly as well as keeping incoming patients (myself included!!) informed and calm. This is the place to be, my friends, when a medical issue enters your life! Thank you Dr. Lily, Landon and Lauren big time!
