Compassionate post-incident care and breathing assessment when you need answers fast.
Choking occurs when food, a small object, or another foreign body partially or fully blocks the airway. In many cases, a person is able to clear the obstruction through coughing or with the help of a bystander, leaving the airway open but the throat tender, irritated, or injured. Even after an incident appears resolved, lingering throat soreness, difficulty swallowing, or a sensation that something is still lodged can signal the need for a professional evaluation.
Breathing difficulty encompasses a range of non-emergency concerns including mild shortness of breath, throat tightness, and upper airway irritation following a choking incident. Mederi Urgent Care is equipped to assess oxygen saturation, examine the throat and upper airway, and determine whether further care or specialist referral is needed.
Many people dismiss post-choking symptoms as minor discomfort, but an undetected partial obstruction or soft-tissue injury to the throat can worsen over time. A same-day evaluation at Mederi gives you a clear picture of your condition and a care plan tailored to your needs, without a long wait at an emergency room.
Our clinical team understands how frightening a choking incident can be. We take every concern seriously, provide thorough documentation of findings, and coordinate with specialists when imaging or advanced airway assessment is required. Walk in to an open Los Angeles-area clinic or book online to reserve your spot.
HOW CHOKING AND BREATHING EVALUATION WORKS
Walk In or Book Online
No appointment is required at an open Los Angeles-area clinic. You can also book a same-day slot through SolvHealth to reduce your wait time. A member of our front desk team will check you in and collect your symptoms and incident history.
Clinical Assessment
A Mederi provider will perform a focused evaluation of your throat, neck, and breathing. This typically includes pulse oximetry to check your oxygen saturation, a visual and physical throat exam, and a review of your symptoms. If imaging is needed to locate a retained foreign body, we will coordinate an X-ray or refer you to an appropriate facility.
Care Plan and Discharge
Based on your evaluation, we will provide treatment for throat irritation or minor injury, prescribe medication if indicated, and give you a clear discharge plan with follow-up instructions. If a specialist evaluation is needed, we will provide a referral and documentation of your visit.
COMPREHENSIVE CHOKING AND BREATHING DIFFICULTY SERVICES
Post-Choking Throat Evaluation
After a choking incident, our providers examine your throat and neck for signs of soft-tissue injury, swelling, or irritation. Early evaluation helps identify conditions that could worsen without treatment and gives you documented medical findings for your records.
Foreign Body Assessment
If you feel that an object may still be partially lodged in your throat or upper airway after a choking episode, we will assess the area and coordinate imaging or specialist referral as needed. We manage cases where the foreign body is not posing an immediate airway emergency.
Oxygen Saturation Monitoring
We use pulse oximetry to measure the level of oxygen in your blood, giving us immediate insight into how well your lungs and airway are functioning after a choking incident or during a period of breathing difficulty. Results guide the next steps in your care.
Throat Irritation and Injury Care
Choking can leave the throat tender, inflamed, or scratched. We assess the extent of irritation and provide appropriate treatment including anti-inflammatory medication, soothing protocols, and dietary guidance to support healing.
Breathing Difficulty Evaluation
Mild shortness of breath, chest tightness, or a sensation of throat constriction that does not require emergency care can be evaluated at Mederi. We assess your respiratory rate, listen to breath sounds, and determine the most appropriate course of action for your situation.
Specialist Referral Coordination
When your evaluation indicates a need for advanced imaging, an ENT specialist, pulmonologist, or emergency care, we provide a prompt referral with full documentation of your urgent care visit so the receiving provider has everything they need to continue your care.

I was very fortunate to stumble across this gem of an urgent care facility. Extremely clean, tidy and staffed with user-friendly, proffessional receptionist Lauren/nurse-xray tech Landon and attending provider Lily. All three set me at ease and were wonders at their jobs. Dr. Lily was bang-on in her assessment of my fast moving foot infection, and quickly directed me to where I needed to get optimal treatment. Landon sent my x-rays where they needed to be asap. Lauren was an absolute sweetheart in keeping the waiting area moving smoothly as well as keeping incoming patients (myself included!!) informed and calm. This is the place to be, my friends, when a medical issue enters your life! Thank you Dr. Lily, Landon and Lauren big time!
