ABOUT LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS EVALUATION

Post-syncope assessment to find the cause of fainting and prevent future episodes.

Loss of consciousness, also known as syncope or fainting, occurs when blood flow to the brain is temporarily reduced, causing a brief period of unresponsiveness. Most fainting episodes resolve on their own within seconds to minutes and are followed by a full return to alertness. While the episode itself may be frightening, the more important question is why it happened and whether it is likely to happen again.

Common non-emergency causes of syncope include vasovagal responses triggered by stress, pain, or prolonged standing; orthostatic hypotension from standing up too quickly; low blood sugar; dehydration; heat exposure; and certain medications. Mederi Urgent Care is equipped to evaluate these and other benign causes through a focused history, physical exam, EKG, and point-of-care lab testing.

A thorough evaluation after a fainting episode is important even when you feel fine afterward. Some causes of syncope, while not immediately dangerous, increase the risk of future episodes that could result in a fall or injury. Others may indicate an underlying condition that benefits from earlier monitoring or specialist follow-up. Getting checked the same day gives you and your provider a clearer picture of your health.

Mederi Urgent Care providers conduct a structured post-syncope evaluation at all five Los Angeles area locations. Walk in at any time or book online through SolvHealth for a same-day appointment. We provide documentation of all findings for your primary care provider or any specialist follow-up your results may require.

HOW LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS EVALUATION WORKS

Walk In or Book Online

No appointment is required at any of our five Los Angeles area locations. You can also reserve a same-day slot online through SolvHealth. When you arrive, our team will record when the episode occurred, how long it lasted, what you were doing beforehand, and any symptoms you noticed before or after losing consciousness.

Physical Exam and Diagnostic Testing

Your Mederi provider will check your vital signs, perform a cardiovascular and neurological screen, and order relevant point-of-care testing. This typically includes an EKG to evaluate heart rhythm, blood glucose testing, and a metabolic panel to assess hydration, electrolytes, and other factors that can contribute to syncope.

Diagnosis, Care Plan, and Referral

Based on your exam and test results, your provider will discuss the most likely cause of your episode, provide appropriate treatment or guidance, and advise on activity restrictions and prevention strategies. When cardiology, neurology, or primary care follow-up is indicated, we coordinate a referral and supply complete visit documentation.

COMPREHENSIVE LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS SERVICES

Post-Syncope Evaluation

Our providers conduct a structured assessment of your fainting episode, reviewing the circumstances, duration, and associated symptoms to identify the most likely cause. A detailed history is the foundation of an accurate syncope diagnosis and guides all subsequent testing and management decisions.

EKG and Heart Rhythm Assessment

An electrocardiogram is a standard component of post-syncope evaluation. We perform a 12-lead EKG at the point of care to screen for arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities, and other cardiac findings that can cause fainting. Results are reviewed immediately and factored into your care plan.

Blood Sugar and Metabolic Testing

Low blood sugar is a common and easily treated cause of loss of consciousness. We perform point-of-care glucose testing and a metabolic panel to evaluate blood sugar levels, electrolytes, kidney function, and hydration status as potential contributors to your episode.

Orthostatic Hypotension Evaluation

Orthostatic hypotension, a drop in blood pressure upon standing, is one of the most frequent causes of fainting. We measure your blood pressure and heart rate in lying, sitting, and standing positions to assess for this condition and recommend appropriate management.

Dehydration and Heat-Related Syncope Care

Dehydration and heat exposure reduce blood volume and can trigger fainting, particularly in the Los Angeles summer months. We assess your hydration status, provide IV or oral fluid replacement as appropriate, and counsel on prevention of future heat-related episodes.

Specialist Referral and Documentation

When your evaluation findings suggest a cardiac, neurological, or other underlying condition requiring specialist follow-up, we provide a prompt referral with complete documentation of your visit. Our notes support continuity of care with cardiologists, neurologists, and primary care providers.

MARTHA D.

I was very fortunate to stumble across this gem of an urgent care facility. Extremely clean, tidy and staffed with user-friendly, proffessional receptionist Lauren/nurse-xray tech Landon and attending provider Lily. All three set me at ease and were wonders at their jobs. Dr. Lily was bang-on in her assessment of my fast moving foot infection, and quickly directed me to where I needed to get optimal treatment. Landon sent my x-rays where they needed to be asap. Lauren was an absolute sweetheart in keeping the waiting area moving smoothly as well as keeping incoming patients (myself included!!) informed and calm. This is the place to be, my friends, when a medical issue enters your life! Thank you Dr. Lily, Landon and Lauren big time!
