ABOUT SEIZURE EVALUATION

Prompt post-seizure evaluation, acute seizure assessment, and specialist referral at urgent care across Los Angeles

Experiencing a seizure, or witnessing one in a family member, is frightening and disorienting. Once the seizure has stopped and the person is alert and stable, a medical evaluation is an essential next step. At Mederi Urgent Care, our providers offer same-day seizure evaluation at our open Los Angeles-area clinics. We assess patients after a seizure episode to identify possible triggers, evaluate for underlying causes, manage post-seizure symptoms, and initiate the appropriate referral pathway for ongoing neurological care.

Urgent care for seizure is appropriate in the post-seizure period for patients who are awake, alert, and not in status epilepticus (prolonged or repeated seizures without recovery). This includes patients experiencing a first-time seizure who are otherwise stable, patients with known epilepsy who have had a breakthrough seizure, and individuals who sustained a minor injury during a seizure episode. Our providers perform a focused neurological evaluation, review current medications, assess for acute precipitating causes such as low blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance, fever, or medication non-compliance, and arrange laboratory testing and specialist referral as indicated.

Post seizure care in the hours and days following an episode focuses on identifying the seizure type, assessing seizure frequency and pattern for patients with known epilepsy, evaluating medication levels, and coordinating with neurology. Whether you are managing a new diagnosis or a change in your established seizure pattern, Mederi Urgent Care provides the evaluation, documentation, and referral support your situation requires. HOW SEIZURE EVALUATION WORKS AT URGENT CARE

History and Neurological Assessment

Your provider begins with a detailed history of the seizure event: onset, duration, movements observed, loss of consciousness, tongue biting, incontinence, postictal confusion, and any preceding warning signs (aura). We review your complete medical and medication history, seizure history, and any known epilepsy diagnosis. A focused neurological examination assesses alertness, orientation, motor function, and speech. This evaluation identifies likely seizure type and guides the urgency and direction of further workup.

Laboratory Workup and Acute Cause Identification

Many first-time and breakthrough seizures have an identifiable acute cause that can be identified through blood testing. We arrange on-site or same-day laboratory testing to assess blood glucose, serum electrolytes (sodium, calcium, magnesium), kidney and liver function, complete blood count, and antiepileptic drug levels for patients on seizure medications. Identifying and correcting an acute metabolic trigger is a key component of acute seizure treatment at urgent care.

Acute Treatment, Documentation, and Referral

Based on the evaluation and laboratory findings, we initiate appropriate acute treatment, which may include correcting metabolic abnormalities, adjusting or restarting seizure medications, managing seizure-related injuries, and providing seizure first aid education for the patient and family members. We document the episode fully and arrange urgent neurology referral for new-onset seizures, significant changes in seizure frequency, or abnormal laboratory findings. All patients receive written post seizure care instructions before discharge.

New-Onset Seizure Evaluation

A first-time seizure in an adult or child requires a prompt medical evaluation to identify the cause and assess the risk of recurrence. Our providers perform a thorough history and neurological exam, arrange appropriate laboratory testing, and coordinate urgent neurology referral. Patients with a new-onset seizure who are stable and alert after the event can be appropriately evaluated at urgent care for seizure before their neurology appointment is confirmed. We ensure you leave with a clear next-step plan and appropriate seizure precaution guidance.

Post-Seizure Assessment and Monitoring

The period following a seizure, known as the postictal phase, involves confusion, fatigue, headache, and sometimes temporary weakness that can last from minutes to hours. We evaluate patients in the postictal period to confirm neurological recovery, identify any injuries sustained during the seizure, assess vital signs, and monitor for signs of prolonged postictal state that may indicate a more serious underlying event. Post seizure care at urgent care bridges the gap between the acute event and specialist follow-up.

Focal Seizure Treatment and Management

Focal seizures, previously called partial seizures, originate in one specific area of the brain and may involve a range of motor, sensory, or behavioral symptoms without full loss of consciousness. Focal seizure treatment begins with accurate identification of the seizure type based on symptoms and history, followed by medication review, laboratory testing, and neurology referral for EEG and imaging workup. Our providers document focal seizure characteristics in detail to support the neurologist's evaluation and facilitate appropriate antiepileptic medication management.

Myoclonic Seizure Evaluation

Myoclonic seizures involve brief, involuntary muscle jerks that can affect a single muscle or groups of muscles. They most commonly occur in the morning upon waking and are associated with certain epilepsy syndromes including juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. Myoclonic seizure treatment depends on the underlying epilepsy syndrome and is managed by a neurologist. Our urgent care evaluation documents the character, frequency, and timing of myoclonic episodes, reviews current antiepileptic medications, and coordinates a neurology referral for patients without an established neurologist.

Breakthrough Seizure Management

A breakthrough seizure occurs in a patient with known epilepsy who experiences a seizure despite being on antiepileptic medication. Common causes include medication non-compliance, missed doses, drug interactions, illness, sleep deprivation, alcohol use, or a recent change in medication. Our providers review the patient's current antiepileptic regimen, check drug levels when appropriate, identify potential triggers, provide dosing guidance, and arrange urgent neurology follow-up. Acute seizure treatment for breakthrough seizures at urgent care focuses on stabilizing the medication regimen and preventing recurrence.

Seizure First Aid Education and Safety Planning

Seizure first aid education is a critical component of every seizure evaluation visit. We teach patients and their family members or caregivers how to respond safely during a seizure: time the seizure, place the person on their side, protect the head, never hold the person down or put anything in their mouth, and call 911 if the seizure lasts more than five minutes or the person does not recover normally. We also discuss driving restrictions under California law, water safety, and workplace safety considerations for patients with epilepsy.

MARTHA D.

I was very fortunate to stumble across this gem of an urgent care facility. Extremely clean, tidy and staffed with user-friendly, proffessional receptionist Lauren/nurse-xray tech Landon and attending provider Lily. All three set me at ease and were wonders at their jobs. Dr. Lily was bang-on in her assessment of my fast moving foot infection, and quickly directed me to where I needed to get optimal treatment. Landon sent my x-rays where they needed to be asap. Lauren was an absolute sweetheart in keeping the waiting area moving smoothly as well as keeping incoming patients (myself included!!) informed and calm. This is the place to be, my friends, when a medical issue enters your life! Thank you Dr. Lily, Landon and Lauren big time!
